Permit Area History
Santa Maria Goretti is located in Foggia (Puglia) in southern Italy. The area falls within the Marche-Abruzzo region - a foredeep trough of the Central Apennines. The main plays are for gas in Pleisto-Pliocene clastics and Tertiary carbonates.
The area has been explored under several titles between 1968 and 2008 by ENI, Montedison, Fina and BP-IGP. These operators drilled only four wells, all dry.
The Castorano prospect has been identified as a faulted sub-thrust anticline located at ~4000m, although mature for drilling no activity has taken place.
Recent Permit Activity
Apennine Energy was assigned the permit in 2007. The Company is required to undertake an Environmental Impact Assessment in order to convert the licence to a full permit. To date only G&G data studies have been undertaken on the licence.
Apennine’s strategy is to evaluate the resource potential of the Castorano prospect by reprocessing and re-interpretation of existing seismic data and consider this for drilling. Other leads will also be evaluated.
