Concession Area History

The Concession is located in Basilicata in southern Italy. Geologically it falls within the gas-prolific Brandano Basin, a foredeep of the Apennines.

The Marciano-1 gas discovery was made in the concession in 1989 by Italmineraria (now ENI). The well encountered gas in a number of Pleistocene sand levels, two of which MAR-2 and MAR-3 proved commercial accumulations and were completed. MAR-2 level underwent formation damage and was never put on stream while MAR-3 has been in production since 1995. Cumulative production to date amounts to 0.6 Bscf and the zone is now depleted. The gas was used on site to generate electricity which was fed into the local grid.

Recent Concession Activity

The concession was acquired by Apennine Energy in 2006. Re-interpretation of seismic data confirmed several leads and prospects with potential recoverable gas volumes. Several leads are also characterized by amplitude anomalies which in the Bradano Basin are normally interpreted to be associated with gas. There are both shallow Pleistocene channel fills and deeper Pliocene turbidites at depths varying from about 600 m to over 1300m.

Apennine drilled Marciano-01ST in 2007 and discovered two thin gas bearing sand intervals, MAR-4 at 1283-1288m and MAR-5 at 1326-1331m. The well was re-entered and the two intervals were perforated and tested in June 2011.  The upper zone flowed gas at rates up to 98,000 scmd.  Subsequent analysis of reservoir data by consultants AGR Petroleum indicated that the zone contained insufficient gas to support a commercial development.  The Marciano-01ST well is curently suspended.

Apennine's strategy is to study the remaining poptential of the concesssion.
