Application Area History
Costa Del Sole is located on the south coast of Sicily. The area falls within the oil province of the Ragusa Basin.
The applcation area was previously explored in 1981 as the Agrigento permit by EMS. In 1983 it was transferred to SARCIS and ENI was appointed to operate. Manfria-1bis was drilled in 1986 to a TD of 422m and encountered. heavy oil (12.26°API) in the Siracusa Formation at 4108 m. The well flowed at a rate of 150 bopd with an average water-cut of 20%. Total production during the test amounted to 6,000 barrels of oil. The subsequent down-dip Manfria-2 appraisal well, however, found the reservoir dry and 130 m deeper than at the discovery well. Recoverable reserves were estimated by ENI to be ~2 MMbo and no further drilling was undertaken. The licence was relinquished in 1990.
Apennine Energy Application
Apennine Energy’s application was submitted in 2009 and the permit was assigned by the Department of Energy of the Sicily Region in September 2011. The assignment is subject to submission and approval of an Environmental Impact Assessment.
Apennine’s strategy will be to evaluate the resource potential of the Manfria discovery for development and other prospects for drilling. A major refinery of heavy oil is located at Gela some 10 km from the discovery. Fugro-Robertson has estimated the gross P50 contingent resources of the Costa Del Sole discovery to be 2.4 MMbo*. Fugro Robertson also recognise additional P50 prospective resources of 2.8 MMbo* in the adjacent Cielo prospect.
